Garden Rubbish Clearance

Both the keen and the reluctant gardener knows that gardens – whatever their size - always generate more waste than you’d think.

It’s particularly true during spring – when all the plants are growing fast after a winter’s inactivity –  and autumn, when plants die back and dead leaves proliferate. But even at other times, there are jobs to be done in the garden – and that’s going to produce waste. And that’s not even taking into account the occasional but major jobs that come along – such as re-turfing the lawn, taking out a dead tree or two or clearing some space for a garden shed or summerhouse.

Obviously, to help the environment, you should recycle as much of your garden waste as possible. But, when the waste level goes beyond what can be coped with via the regular ‘green bin’ collection plus a few trips to the local council refuse and recycling depot, you could consider hiring a skip or getting a specialist waste firm, such as Waste King, to remove the waste.

If you decide on a skip, it’s a good idea to order the largest skip you feel able to fill with waste - since larger skips cost less per cubic yard than smaller ones. There are, however, some regulations that cover the siting and use of skips – and it would be as well to discuss your requirements with the skip hire company in order to ensure that you’re going to comply with the law. There are also some rules and regulations about what you can – and can’t – put in skips. You need to understand these – and, again, the skip hire company you use should be able to help you.

You can get advice, guidance and practical help on all this from Waste King on:

Freephone: 0800 141 2778 or, from a mobile, call 01442 210034.

When it comes to loading your skip, you should compress and then bag all the green waste first and place this at the bottom of the skip. Then put any heavier, bulky items on top. These should help to further compress the green waste – allowing you to get more waste into the skip.

However, you mustn’t over-fill a skip. The skip should be ‘level filled’ – that is, the waste should be level with but not above the edges of the skip. If the waste is above these edges, the skip operator can ask you to remove the excess waste before the skip is removed or – legitimately – charge you extra money for the hire of the skip.

Of course, before you hire a skip, you could check out Waste King’s alternative ‘man and van’ collection service. It may be cheaper and easier to get Waste King’s Environment Agency-licensed two-man team to collect – and load – your waste onto their truck, clean up afterwards and leave your garden all ‘spick-and-span’.
